Victims of the Buncefield oil depot fire are set for a £700m damages payout after Total UK Ltd withdrew a major part of its defence to their High Court action.
The company, the world's fourth largest energy group, said that it would no longer maintain its defence that it was not liable for anyone outside a circle of 451 metres from the depot's pump pad, on the basis the scale of the explosion was not foreseeable.
That means that all losses legally recoverable from the December 2005 incident should be paid, irrespective of the distance from the site.
